Costa Rica has two very different faces when it comes to its touristic offerings. One is a more commercial and traditional face that is often found in TV advertising, brochures and online media, most visitors tend to travel the country through this traditional face as it offers safer options and there is more available information about what you might find (vacationers are conservative by nature and it is totally understandable).
The other face is the nonconventional tourism in Costa Rica that offers activities outside the traditional luxury travel landscape, this is the perfect option for adventurous travelers who don’t mind giving up all the commodities for a more real and closer experience with the local wildlife and nature.
Farm Tours: Being a country where agriculture and livestock play an important role in the local economy provide numerous opportunities to visitors to learn more about how these rural daily activities take place, however most tourists are often more interested in forest and beach activities rather than traveling to secluded mountainous locations. A farm tour is a wonderful opportunity for a firsthand approach to the real Costa Rica, the down side of these tours is that they are not very popular among foreign travelers therefore they don’t offer too much schedule availability.

Fitness Tours: Exercising is undoubtedly an important part of human life however… Are you in for a complete fitness experience during your trip? I can guarantee you that most people wouldn’t love the idea, this is the main reason why these tours are not popular, still if you are not afraid of the physical challenge some great tours might include mountain bike tours, Pilates, intensive eco-walking tours and rafting class III-IV.
Mountain Bike Tours
Guided City Tours: The activity itself is popular but most people prefer to do it on their own rather than hiring a travel company to assemble the tour. This might be a mistake because regardless of how much you have studied the city you’ll never be able to cover all the important locations on your own and you are almost sure to miss something relevant during your visit, for that reason it is advisable to hire a tour guide to show you the highlights of the city.
The Nonconventional tourism in Costa Rica is not suited for all travelers, for example families and honeymooners might not be ready to give up on all the things that can make their trip comfortable, please keep this in mind before jumping right into some of previously mentioned activities.
