Costa Rica offers to tourism an amazing assortment of plants and wild life trough out the many natural reserves in the country. Rivers are also a great spot for travelers wanting to explore the surrounding natural beauty while cruising down in an unforgettable adventure.
White water rafting is a popular sport in the rivers of Costa Rica as many levels of expertise are offered: class II-III and III-IV (for the most expert traveler).
A brief overview of some of the most visited rivers in Costa Rica:
Celeste River: Rio Celeste is considered one of the most beautiful and scenic rivers in the country because of the intense turquoise color that displays, especially notorious during summer time. This particular color is due chemical reactions of calcium carbonate and sulfur from the Tenorio Volcano. Besides the stunning color of its water, Celeste River also has one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica and natural hot springs.

Sarapiqui River: This River extends for 85 km and origins from the old crater of Poas volcano (a crystal clear cold-water lagoon). The river has a particular appeal for rafting lovers as it offers a great natural diversity where you can see many species of animals like monkeys, beautiful birds, iguanas, sloths, crocodiles and river turtles, among others, as well as a dense and beautiful flora.
Pacuare River: The Rio Pacuare is one of the top five rafting rivers in the world for its breathtaking scenery and rapids. Its waterfalls, its great forests and animal life make this river the ideal location for a tropical rain forest adventure. Located on the Atlantic zone, the river borders the Talamanca mountain chain, home to the aboriginal town of the “Cabecars”.
Tabacon River: Located near the Arenal Volcano and due to a number of recent improvements became an attraction in La Fortuna. Tabacon hot springs (as it is known), has an average temperature of 37 degrees C °, these waters facilitate the relaxation of muscles, skin cleansing and gradual elimination of stress. Several companies operate in the vicinity offering tours to the river. Enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounded by a tropical forest!
Corobici River: For those who prefer a tranquil journey across the river, this trip is ideal to relax, take pictures and be one with nature. You will experience the wonderful scenery in a way you have never done it before. Nature lovers will find lots of wildlife while cruising down and may even have time to eat lunch surrounded by the exotic tropical forest. In the city of “Bebedero” you can take a trip to Palo Verde National Park (which has more than 300 species of birds).
