Corcovado National Park is located on the west side of the Osa Peninsula. Corcovado was declared National Park in 1975. It covers an area of 55,000 km2. The variety of species in this mangrove forest is impressive and rarely seen somewhere else in the world.
The region is well known for its natural beauty and it has been described by many as the most beautiful place in Costa Rica. It is also considered one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet, according to the prestigious magazine National Geographic. Scientists estimate that Corcovado is home of five percent of all existing life forms on the planet.
Here you can find over 500 species of trees, 140 mammal and 370 bird species, besides 150 species of orchids, 120 species of reptiles and amphibians and over 6000 types of insects. During a tour to the park you can observe a great variety of animals, including four species of monkeys, plenty of macaws, parrots, toucans, coatis, tolomucos, peccaries, tapirs and snakes. Wild cats are quite abundant here, but very difficult to watch as they are very shy.
