The Barra Honda National Park is situated in the Barra Honda region of the Tempisque Basin and is famous for the limestone caves cut by the water through the small mountains found inside the park.

The time to visit the Barra Honda National Park in Costa Rica is during the dry season because it is closed during the wet season. Once you reach there, you can get your accommodation in one of the four cabins, each of which can accommodate six to eight people. These cabins are ideal for people who don’t have a big budget for staying. Otherwise, you can also stay at Nicoya where hotels and lodges of every price range are available. There is also a camping station across from the cabins. The entrance fee for the Barra Honda National Park is USD 7.
There are more than 40 limestone caverns in the Barra Honda National Park. For visiting most of the caves, climbing gear, a guide and permission from the authorities are required. Most of the caves have vertical entrances and hence, they are in good condition. You will find different calcareous formations inside these caves. You will get to see stalactites, stalagmites, cave grapes, curtains, soda straws, pearls and many other types of formation.
There are also scores of hiking trails that are used to access the caves. There are some rare cactuses and tress of dry tropical forest to be seen. Capuchin Monkeys are found in abundance in the region. Among other animals, you will get to see Howler Monkeys, Raccoons, Deer, Peccaries, Kinkajous, Anteaters and Agoutis.
