Celeste River

The gorgeous Celeste River is one of the most beautiful rivers of Costa Rica. It originates near the Tenorio Volcano and charms visitors with its sky blue water and miles of vegetation on both sides.

When visitors travel the river upstream, they first encounter a waterfall that cascades down the mountain and forms a pool at the bottom. Further upriver is the source of the Celeste River and it is where it gets it sky blue colored water. The sky blue color is formed by the mixture of sulphur from a thermal stream that originates at the bottom of the river and calcium carbonate that comes in from a small stream that mixes with the water of the Celeste River.

The area on both sides of the Celeste River is infested with some of the richest collection of animal and bird species found anywhere in Costa Rica. Jaguars, Cougars, Margays and Ocelots are commonly found here. Apart from the feline species, large number of Peccaries, Tapirs, Anteaters, Coatis, Raccoons and Howler and Capuchin Monkeys can also be seen. There are also varieties of bird species like Toucans, Bell Birds, Turkey Vultures, Guans, Hummingbirds and others that can be seen in abundance.

The Celeste River is a myriad of hot springs and tranquil atmosphere. Apart from visiting the source of the river, visitors also have a great time going for a hike on the Tenorio Volcano and walking the trails along the river.
