The Chirripo National Park is one of the wildest national parks in Costa Rica. Most of the terrain is inaccessible and hence, virgin. The main attractions of the Chirripo National Park are hiking trails and a climb up Cerro Chirripo, the highest mountain peak of Costa Rica.
For accommodation, there are climber huts that can be found at Llano Bonito and Valle de las Morenas. The main refuge is located about ½ a Km from the Cerro Chirripo and can accommodate 50 people.
The Chirripo National Park is famous for its tropical rainforest, tropical highland forest and subalpine tundra. As you climb up the peak inside the park, you get amazed by the change in vegetation at every upper level. This place is a haven for biologists.
Among attractions is the thermal natural spring that can be reached by a 15 minute walk from the ranger station in San Gerardo de Rivas. This pool is a private property and you may need to make a token payment of a dollar to be able to soak in the warm waters and relax. You must also visit the Wilson Botanical Gardens near San Vito. This takes a bit of traveling but is worth it. You can also spend a week trekking across the continent at La Amistad International Park. There is also the Rancho Merced National Wildlife Refuge about 24 miles South of San Isidro. Guided tours of this refuge are a must if you like flora and fauna.
Added to all this is the challenge to climb atop the Cerro Chirripo, the highest mountain peak of Costa Rica. This is a challenging hiking trail but you will be amazed by the beauty of it. There are animals and birds in abundance and a guided tour is a must.
