Piedras Blancas National Park

The Piedras Blancas National Park is situated in the Puntarenas Province of Costa Rica and covers an area of 34,642 acres. It was formed in 1991 to protect biology and eco system in the region.

To reach the Piedras Blancas National Park, you need to travel 180 miles south from San Jose on the Interamerican Highway until you reach Palmar. Then you need to travel further south from Palmar for about 20 miles until you come to the turnoff that will take you to the La Gamba Esquinas Rainforest. After the La Gamba Esquinas Rainforest is the Piedras Blancas National Park.

The Piedras Blancas National Park is aimed at protecting the rainforest and beaches that lie inland to Golfo Dulce on the Pacific of Costa Rica. The Piedras Blancas National Park acts as a biological corridor to two Costa Rican national parks. On one hand, it protects the bays, beaches and rainforests of Golfo Dulce and on the other hand, it protects the eco system of Osa Peninsula.

There are no accommodation arrangements worth noting at the Piedras Blancas National Park. The best option is to stay at the town of La Gamba and make a day trip to the national park. There are some cabins near the Piedras Blancas National Park but we would still recommend that you make arrangements at La Gamba.

The area around the Piedras Blancas National Park is a typical rainforest region and receives heavy rainfall throughout the year. The average rainfall measures about 200 inches.

One of the best attractions of the Piedras Blancas National Park is trekking. You can climb up the mountains. The vegetation and the animal and bird species change drastically as you climb up the slope. You can also sail on the the Esquinas River and the Piedras Blancas River. The entire region is a refuge to some rare birds, mammals, reptiles and tropical trees. There are scores of migratory birds that visit the Piedras Blancas National Park at select times of the year.
