The Tenorio Volcano National Park is located 100 miles north of San Jose and covers an area of almost 31,800 acres. It was created in 1976 and is one of the most popular national parks of Costa Rica.
To reach the Tenorio Volcano National Park, you need to drive from San Jose to San Carlos and then to Upala. From Upala, you need to turn left towards Bijagua and then drive for about 30 miles to reach the park. Otherwise, you can also take the Interamerican Highway from San Jose to reach Canas. After driving about 6 miles from Canas, there is a turn to Bijagua. Then from Bijagua, you need to take the usual route.
The most popular attraction at the Tenorio Volcano National Park is the Rio Celeste. The water of this river is rendered a light blue color that is caused by the constant emanation of sulphur and precipitations of calcium carbonate. The Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica is also well known for its forest cover. The entire park is covered by rainforest and cloud forest. There are innumerable small rivers, thermal hot springs and waterfalls that dot the park. The Laguna La Danta, or Tapir Lake is also present inside the Tenorio Volcano National Park.
There are two volcanoes in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. They are called Tenorio Volcano and Montezuma Volcano. Both the volcanoes are dormant and there has been no recent history of eruptions. Montezuma Volcano has twin craters.
There is a ranger station at the Tenorio Volcano National Park that is open from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. The ranger station has rest rooms, first aid facilities and potable water facilities.
Popular activities inside the Tenorio Volcano National Park include hiking trails. There are trails to both the Tenorio Volcano and Montezuma Volcano. Going up the slopes of both these volcanoes is a great experience as far as flora and fauna are concerned. There are various species of vegetation, animals, birds and insects that can be seen while going up on the trail. Trails can also be taken to swimming areas and picnic spots.
