On February 7 Laura Chinchilla candidate of (PLN) – Partido Liberacion Nacional became the first female president in the history of Costa Rica with an overwhelming 46% of the total votes emitted.
Chinchilla on her acceptance speech said – “The people of Costa Rica have trusted me and I will not betray that trust”, she also ratified her commitment with education, security, and gender equality. At various conferences and debates leading up to elections Chinchilla said she will endorse the efforts made by current president Oscar Arias. Chinchilla’s most successful political trajectory began in 2006 when she was chosen to be the first Vice President of the country and Minister of Justice.

Chinchilla’s main rivals during this political campaign were Otton Solis from the (PAC) – Partido Accion Ciudadana with 25% of the total of votes and Otto Guevara from (ML) – Partido Movimiento Libertario with 20% of the citizen’s preference. Both on their speeches congratulated Chinchilla and make a call for dialogue between all political parties.
