Costa Rica Celebrates New Leadership

On a memorable event celebrated yesterday Laura Chinchilla became officially the first female president of Costa Rica. The event gathered 150 special guests including some of the most important political authorities of several countries: Felipe (Prince of Asturias), Alvaro Uribe (President of Colombia), Felipe Calderon (President of Mexico), Rafael Correa (President of Ecuador), and Princess Nora of Liechtenstein.

On her 25 minutes emotional speech, Chinchilla made clear emphasis on “dialog and union” as a way to cooperate with the new government. “No one should pretend to monopolize the truth” – She said, referring to team work as one of the main responsibilities for those sharing the political sphere in Costa Rica. Chinchilla became the 15th president of Costa Rica since the 1959´s Constitution.

Chinchilla will assume a number of challenges that include: environmental conservation, security, among others.

The event took place outdoors in the Sabana Metropolitan Park and officially ended past midday, a big concert was offered right after. Iride Martinez, Ruben Blades, Debbie Nova and Malpais were just some of the musicians invited.

In the vicinity six people were reported arrested in a protest related to environmental issues and port concessions in the Caribbean.
