The Day Costa Rica Commemorates a Hero

April 11 is the day Costa Rica commemorates the national hero “Juan Santamaria” who by his heroic act in April 11, 1856 saved Costa Rica from William Walker and his army that pretended to establish a dictatorship in the country. Ticos take this celebration seriously and proudly organize several patriotic events in the province of Alajuela where Juan Santamaria was born. The central park of Alajuela is the hub of the festivities.
