Arenal – which is located in the Northern Plains, contains the famous volcano of the same name, whose almost continuous eruptions puts among the worlds 10 most active volcanoes. The towns of La Fortuna and Arenal are situated close to the volcano as well as the large artificial Lake Arenal. Manuel Antonio – is famous for its national park and beaches right next to the hills. San Jose – is the capital city and is located in the Central Plains region with the city itself almost bang in the centre of Costa Rica. Unlike the coastal regions which are generally hot and humid, this area and the city has mild to moderate weather throughout the year, leading to high population density. The area is known for its rivers and the mountains with their coffee plantations. There are major forest reserves to the north and south as well as volcanoes. Guanacaste – is located in the North Pacific region and the whole area is famous for its volcano chain to the east and stunning shoreline to the west with magnificent mountain lakes in between. Nicoya Peninsula – located just south of the North Pacific region is one of the most favored destinations in Costa Rica for beach tourism.
